Hydroseeding

Large-Scale Seeding for Rapid Revegetation

Hydraulic mulch seeding for erosion control, disturbed land reclamation, and large-acreage coverage across Wyoming and western South Dakota.

Large-Scale Seeding, Fast Results

G&G Landscape provides hydroseeding services for commercial sites, energy and mining reclamation, highway corridors, subdivision developments, and rural properties across Gillette, Sheridan, Buffalo, Casper, Douglas, Sundance, and Spearfish. Hydroseeding is the most efficient method for establishing grass and ground cover on large or difficult-to-access areas.

The process applies a pressurized slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer, tackifier, and water directly to prepared soil. The mulch layer holds moisture, protects seed from wind and erosion, and accelerates germination. On disturbed sites where topsoil has been stripped or slopes exceed hand-seeding limits, hydroseeding provides consistent coverage that broadcast seeding cannot match.

Wyoming's arid climate and wind exposure make seed establishment challenging. We select seed mixes adapted to local conditions -- native grasses, dryland turf blends, and reclamation mixes that meet BLM, WDEQ, and county specifications. Application rates, mulch types, and tackifier concentrations are adjusted per site based on slope, soil type, and regulatory requirements.

Our Hydroseeding Process

  1. Site Evaluation

We assess soil conditions, slope angles, drainage patterns, and any regulatory requirements for the project. Access routes for equipment are identified and acreage is measured for material estimates.

  2. Seed Mix Selection

Seed species are chosen based on the site's intended use, soil type, elevation, and any agency specifications. We source certified seed and can match reclamation mixes required by BLM, WDEQ, or local permits.

  3. Slurry Preparation

Seed, hydraulic mulch, starter fertilizer, soil amendments, and tackifier are mixed with water in the hydroseeder tank. The slurry is calibrated for the correct application rate per acre based on slope and soil conditions.

  4. Application

The slurry is sprayed onto the prepared surface in even passes. On steep slopes, we apply in multiple coats with bonded fiber matrix mulch for maximum erosion resistance. Coverage is verified visually and by tracking tank loads against acreage.

  5. Monitoring and Reapplication

We check germination progress and assess coverage density during the establishment period. Areas that show poor germination due to washout, wildlife, or dry conditions are flagged for spot reapplication.

Hydroseeding FAQs

How does hydroseeding compare to sod?

Hydroseeding costs significantly less per square foot than sod, making it the go-to method for large acreage. The tradeoff is time: hydroseeded areas need several weeks to germinate and several months to fully establish, while sod provides an instant lawn. For sites over an acre, reclamation projects, or areas where immediate aesthetics are not the primary concern, hydroseeding is the more practical option.

How long does it take for hydroseeding to germinate?

In favorable conditions, initial germination is visible within 7 to 14 days. Full establishment with dense ground cover typically takes 6 to 10 weeks depending on the seed mix, soil temperature, and moisture. Native grass mixes used in reclamation work may take a full growing season to reach target density.

What is the best season for hydroseeding in Wyoming?

Late spring (mid-May through June) and early fall (September through mid-October) are the strongest windows in northeast Wyoming. Spring applications benefit from seasonal moisture. Fall applications allow cool-season grasses to establish roots before winter dormancy. Summer applications can work with supplemental irrigation but face higher evaporation rates.

How many acres can you cover?

We handle projects from a fraction of an acre up to hundreds of acres. Our equipment capacity and tank size allow efficient coverage of large sites, and we mobilize additional units for projects that require high daily output. Acreage, slope conditions, and access determine the production schedule.
